In Sections 4.1 and 4.2, you explored how the TOR network allows a certain amount of anonymity on the Internet and how this led to the Darknet. While many of the services provided on the Darknet (using TOR) are illegal, immoral and/or unethical, it is also used by civil rights activists, lawyers and those under oppressive regimes.

For this question, we want you to explore this debate. Start by reading this article from Reuters (which you can also download from the Assessment page on the module website). https://www.reuters.com/technology/russia-ratchets-up-internet-crackdown-with-block-privacy-service-tor-2021-12-08/ Starting with the information in the article, write a report outlining the ban of TOR in Russia. Your report should be titled The banning of TOR by a government and should cover the following:

i.Describe how the TOR network provides anonymity.

ii.How many users of TOR does the article say there are in Russia?

iii.What reason does the Russian internet regulator, Roskomnadzor, give for prohibiting the use of the TOR network?

iv.Provide an argument supporting the Russian government position.

v.Provide a counter argument as to why Russians should have access to TOR.

vi.Come to a conclusion as to whether any government should be able to restrict access to the internet.
