In the mechanism shown in the Figure Q5(b), the 10-kg slider 4 on the inclined shaft is attached to two springs having stiffness constants of k = 200 N/m and k = 400 N/m, respectively. Both springs are initially unstretched when the slider is released from rest to move down the inclined shaft.
