In this context, in recent years there has been a double phenomenon of strong impact on supply chains efficiency: first, globalization of supply chains and, secondly, the constant increased costs of raw materials. The combination of these two phenomena is not a trivial issue because, strategically, underscores the urgency of action in pursuit of maximum performance in logistics activities undertaken across the supply chain (transport, handling, storage, production, ...), eliminating "waste" or activities that do not add value to the market (in line with the Kaizen approach, "Just in Time" (JIT) or "Lean Manufacturing") but also developing and implementing innovations in processes and products. Likewise, the growing sensitivity in society as regards a responsible management should imply that the supply chain management should be enlarged to take in the concept of sustainability and its three axes associated: environmental, economic and social (Ciliberti et al., 2008). Beyond the individual framework of a company, this sustainability concept should be extended to the other companies in the supply chain, whereby all their organizations should take an active part in designing and implementing logistic processes that can be considered as sustainable (Ciliberti et al, 2008; Carter and Rogers, 2008; Seuring and Mller, 2008; Andersen et al. 2009). In this context, sustainability and efficiency) should be considered as complementary (Mejas-Sacaluga et al., 2011). An example can be given using the dairy industry in which a brik was developed by Ruben Rausing in 1951 in Lund (Sweden). It can be made for up to six different layers and for guidance, a brick pack would comprise 75% cardboard, 20% plastic (Polyethylene) and 5% of aluminum. Despite its usefulness to preserve perishable liquid foods (including milk) without refrigeration and preservatives and its good logistical efficiency (volumetric occupation), this package is still blamed for environmental problems. However, this difficulty of re-cycling has improved as technology evolves in separation of layers. The logistics of milk briks has no special requirements of conservation (temperature) as it happens with other milky products like cheese, yoghurt and cream (with a specific supply chain). UTI SUN COURIERS UTi Sun Couriers was founded in 1981 and specialises in the movement of parcels, envelopes and freight to and from any address in South Africa and the BNLS countries (Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho and Swaziland). Its distribution network consists of 36 branches, including six hubs and six BLNS branches, and reaches 400 towns on a daily basis and a further 1 044 towns on a bi-weekly or ad-hoc basis. During an average month, UTi Sun Couriers collects and delivers 1,2 million parcels through this network. In 2008, UTi Sun Couriers launched its UTi Pak and Pak prepaid boxes. The Pak boxes measures 10x30x40 cm and is designed for shipments of up to 2kg in weight. The Pak is 20x30x40 cm in size and can safely carry up to 5kg. The boxes are custom designed and to be tamperproof and sturdy. The packs are sold to customers at a flat rate (ie the cost of the box includes both the packaging and the transport of the shipment. A special barcoded prepaid dispatch note was also designed to help clearly identify prepaid shipments. This dispatch note is pasted onto each Pak before it is sold to the client. The Paks are targeted at freight originating in regional towns, with the intention of increasing freight coming out of those towns to which freight flow has traditionally been relatively one-directional. They can be sent to any main or regional centre serviced by UTi Sun Couriers within South Africa. Clients can use the bar-coded dispatch note number to track their parcels on Sun Couriers website (http://sun.co.za) or they can call the national contact centre. Source: UIrike Kussing, 2020. QUESTION 1 (25) In light of the case study recommend the various initiatives that can be introduced by the dairy industry in ensuring that their logistics operations are considered sustainable. QUESTION 2 (25) Using relevant examples critically discuss the warehouse operations and evaluate their significance within a supply chain network. QUESTION 3 (25) What possible benefits can UTi Sun Couriers and its clients gain from using prepaid boxes? Refer specifically to the logistics benefits that UTi Sun Couriers will experience. Provide evidence to support your argument. QUESTION 4 (25) What role do the barcoded dispatch notes play in the logistics process? Where in the supply chain will they contribute the most to increased efficiency? Discuss critically
