In this module, we are looking at different ways to divide up a data set. Why would we want to do that? The most common reason is to customize our approach to interacting with different customers. If we have a collection of customers, with varied purchasing habits, a "one size fits all" approach to marketing is going to be suboptimal. We want to be able to present certain segments of customers with products that are going to be of interest to them whereas other customers would need to see different products or promotions.

As we have discussed in other parts of this module, there are different methods for segmenting a data set. Some of these are very easy and can be done in Excel using standard tools like sort or filter. We can use these when our needs are simple and we want to segment data on a single field. When our needs become more complex, we can turn to more advanced data analysis tools such as clustering or classification which I have provided information on in other parts of this module.

Your assignment for this module is both simple and undefined. I have given you a file and I want you to segment it in three different ways. You choose which ways but make them useful. First, get to know the contents of this file (it is a collection of sales records for a large department store) and then decide on three different ways to divide up the dataset. As you will see, the data set is quite large.

What I want you to turn in is a description of the three ways you divided up the data set and what the results of each of these efforts was. What did you find? You can document this in a Word document or in the actual data file itself. I will let you choose but what I will ask is that you present your findings in a way that would make it clear to your boss or to colleagues what you have done and the value of what you have found.
