In this project, you'll copy an angle by completing a geometric construction. You'll begin with an angle and then follow a series of steps to construct an angle that has the same measure as your first angle.
This activity has instructions for completing both a paper and pencil construction and a technology construction. You may choose the method youprefer to complete; you donotneed to complete both methods. After you finishone method, upload a photo or screenshot of your construction to submit to your teacher for grading.
If you choose to complete the paper and pencil construction rather than the technology construction, you will need a straightedge and a compass. You should also use a protractor to check the measures of the angles in your construction.
Step 1
Using a straightedge, draw an angle. Label the vertexP.
Step 2
Using a straightedge, draw a ray that does not appear to intersectP.
Label the initial pointR.
Step 3
Place the needle of a compass on pointP,
and then draw an arc (part of a circle) that intersects both sides ofP.
Do not change the compass setting.
Label the intersections of the arc and the sides of angleP
as pointsK
andL.
Now you haveLPK.
Step 4
Keep the compass setting and place the needle of the compass on pointR.
Then, draw an arc (about the same length as the previous arc) through rayR.
Label this intersection pointM.
Now you haveRM.
Step 5
Place the needle of the compass at pointK
and adjust its width to pointL.
Do not change the compass setting.
Step 6
Keep the compass setting and place the needle of the compass on pointM.
Then, draw an arc that intersects the arc drawn inStep 4. Label the intersection pointN.
Step 7
Using a straightedge, draw a ray throughR
andN,
now you haveNRM.
Step 8
Using a protractor, measureLPK
andNRM.
Write those measures on your construction.
Verify the measure of each angle is the same. IfLPK=NRM,
then you completed this construction correctly.
Step 9
Scan or take a photo of your final construction and save this file.
