Indirect Email Assignment Instructions

Writing Task and Context: In your last assignment, you wrote a brief, direct approach email to someone in your field of study/professional field that you would be interested in meeting for an informational interview. In this second assignment, you will be writing an indirect, bad news email using the indirect approach. For the purpose of this assignment, youll practice a role reversal and imagine you are the expert that you wrote to. Essentially, youll be writing to yourself, but from the experts point of view. You (the expert) have received request for an informational interview from a Humber College student. Unfortunately, your schedule is booked into the next year, and you cant meet with them at all. You will need to write a reply to let them know. Because you are delivering news that will be disappointing to the reader, youll need to use the indirect approach to negative messages outlined in Module 4. Steps to Writing:

Step 1: Complete a PAM analysis (Research and Writing Journal #4) to help you identify your purpose, audience and the content you want to include Step 2: Draft your email, using the indirect approach to organize your message and following the checklist in Module 4 The Indirect Approach to Communication Step 3: Revise your message using the indirect organization (see Module 4: Negative and Persuasive Messages). Be sure to follow the structure of an email with proper header, subject line, and signature block (see Module 3) Step 4: Submit on Blackboard by the due date. Be sure to use one of the approved file formats (pdf, .doc, .docx).
