Appendix A (Unit 1)- Problem Formulation
The aim of the problem formulation phase is to develop the conceptual model (CMO) that
depicts the system that impacts the effectiveness of your management performance.
Step 1.1- What the literature savs (develop a CMap): Do a literature review on
Management Effectiveness. This is your level 1 review. Resulting from this review, develop a
concept map (CMAP) for management effectiveness. The CMap must fully capture and explain
this concept.
Use your concept map to conduct an analysis of your own management effectiveness.
Identify about 15 insights (strengths and weaknesses of your management effectiveness -
phrased as propositions).
Step 1.2- What your colleagues say: You are required to conduct a 360 assessment on
your management performance. You can research/find/design your own assessment or use the
competing values assessment that was provided. It is ideal to identify: A line manager, 2
colleagues who work more or less at the same organisational level as you, 1 direct report or
colleague who work closely with you but are at a lower managerial level than you. In addition,
complete the assessment yourself as a self-assessment. Analyse the results of this
assessment and identify a further 15 insights (strengths and weaknesses of your management
effectiveness - phrased as propositions).
