Despite the significant impact the COVID-19 pandemic caused on public health, the pandemic also caused a major economic shock. Small establishments were excessively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic since the businesses are more likely to be in the industries that were harder hit by restrictions on movements, such as arts and recreation, restaurants, and cafes. Although small businesses adopted online business and working from home approaches to prevent their shutdown during the COVID-19 pandemic, these businesses were adversely affected by the pandemic since it caused the adoption and institution of regulations that included lockdowns, social distancing, and stay-at-home policies, which resulted from mass layoffs and closures of small trades.

Several small businesses were distressed by the COVID-19 pandemic as they were expected to deliver services and serve clients while observing social distancing. Most small businesses have minimal space to conduct their operations, making it challenging to implement social distancing policies. Companies affected by the limited space factor had to close for compliance purposes. The closures were mainly because it would be practically impossible to observe social distancing as a precautionary measure during operations.

Stay at Home Policies which were adopted in some economies globally, also impacted small businesses. Majorly, a small business could not continue operations as people were required to remain indoors, and the regulations confined them not to leave their homes. Considerably, a small business that did not meet the expenditures to pay workers as the establishments did not generate income resulted in mass layoffs and closures of the business. Generally, most small companies overcame being shut down by allowing employees to work from home to avert the issues of closure and mass layoffs.

Due to COVID-19, different governments instituted lockdowns that resulted in businesses experiencing low sales. As a result, several small businesses experienced reduced revenue inflows. The companies that suffered the most were the corporations that depended on clients to physically access the business premises for their services. These businesses had to suspend services until conducive procedures were approved. Consideration, the pandemic caused business managers to come up with innovative approaches that would assist their business to reach their potential clients and market in time by embracing digital methods of making a business succeed under the restrictions brought about by the pandemic. Several companies thus adopted working from home and online marketing and sales approaches to overcome being shut down.
