In this module, wecontinue to learn one additional section of a brief: Thelaw.Thelawsection states the rule of law that the court applied to reach its holding or decision. This section isn't even provided in full sentences as you're simply naming the law used and the location where it can be found.

For example, if it's a case the title would be Smith v. United States and it's citation is where it's found, 312 U.S. 212 (1989).If it's a statute, the name might be The Lanham Act, found in 42 U.S.C. 1310.

Many students learning to brief a case will define the law in this section, but that isnotappropriate. Next week we will learn about the rationale section of the brief, which is the longest section and includes defining the law and how the court used it to reach its decision.
