Instructions

This assignment will incorporate what you have learned about projects and project managers in this course.

See attachments at the end of these instructions for rubric teemplate and detailed APA instructions.

Choose a project that is of interest to you. It does not have to be in your field of study. The project that you choose must meet these requirements:

  • you have heard about this project and there is sufficient reputable online or paper based research material available to discuss this project... OR
  • a project that you or someone that you know has personally been involved in. If it is a project that you were personally involved in, you should be familiar with, and have access to, all of the information that you need to do this assignment. It will still need to be cited. If it is a project that someone else you know was involved in, make sure you have access to that person for interviews which will be cited in the assignment.

For this assignment, you will cover all of the following areas:

1) Briefly describe the "definition" of your project:

  • Purpose/Background - Provide a brief description of what this project is about and how it originated. Why was this project undertaken? What were its goals?
  • Scope - What work was and was not done on the project? When and where did it take place?
  • Success criteria - What would have to happen for this project to be considered a "success"? Or was this never stipulated?
  • Constraints - Describe the quadruple constraints on this project and how they impacted and affected each other.
  • Risks - What were the risks in this project? How were they incorporated in to the project plan? How did they affect the project when it was executed?

2) Discuss the project manager:

  • Who was it? Discuss his/her background if known.
  • Describe how s/he did or did not possess the skills, qualities and/or characteristics that we learned in class that typically constitute an effective project manager.

3) Stakeholders:

  • Who were the stakeholders in this project and what were each of their roles?
  • The use of a Power Interest Grid will help analyze stakeholder roles.

4) Process Groups (Life Cycle Stages)

  • Briefly describe what happened in the FIVE PMI Process Groups (Life Cycle Stages) in this project and the approximate time frame of each phase.

5) Ethical Issues:

  • Discuss two ethical issues that may have arisen during the life cycle of this project. If you cannot find documented evidence of an ethical issue, use your imagination and analyze what might have come up. How were they (or how could they have been) handled by the project manager.

6) Outcome:

  • Was this project considered to be "successful"? How/why?
  • Incorporating the concepts learned in this course, describe the reasons for the success/failure of this project.

You do not need to follow a formal "research paper" format. I would prefer that you simply use the headings in the six areas that I have outlined above and thoroughly answer each question. (See the attached template below) Your assignment must be well presented and free from grammar, spelling, and syntax errors.
