Use the BEARS.xls data set, found on the CD that came with your textbook. We will use only the columns AGE and WEIGHT. There is a copy of the data set posted to your Resources Tab.
- Using Excel for Correlation, Pages 534-536
- Excel's CORREL Function for finding r Calculate the correlation coefficient for the AGE and WEIGHTS as follows: =CORREL(list of AGES, list of WEIGHTS)
- Write 2-3 sentences describing the meaning of the correlation coefficient, r, using the labels for the correlation as given in the textbook and the lecture.
- Excel's Chart Wizard for Scatterplot, Pages 73-74
- Again, use the AGE (x) and WEIGHTS (y) columns in the BEARS.xls data set, and create a scatter plot.
- Create the least-squares line: Instructions not in the textbook, given here:
- Right-click on any of the blue coordinates in your scatter plot.
- Choose "Add Trendline"
- Make sure Linear is chosen; also click on the last two checkboxes:
- Display Equation on chart
- Display R-squared value on chart
- Drag the equation and the r-squared value textbox to an empty area on the graph (so it is easier to read).
