Instructions

Your Chapter 10 Excel Assignment is in several parts.

  • Using Excel for Correlation is on page 509
  • Using Excel to construct a Scatterplot is on page 86

Use the BEARS.xls data set, found on the CD that came with your textbook. We will use only the columns AGE and WEIGHT. There is a copy of the data set posted to your Resources Tab.

  1. Using Excel for Correlation, Pages 534-536
  2. Excel's CORREL Function for finding r Calculate the correlation coefficient for the AGE and WEIGHTS as follows: =CORREL(list of AGES, list of WEIGHTS)
  • Write 2-3 sentences describing the meaning of the correlation coefficient, r, using the labels for the correlation as given in the textbook and the lecture.
  1. Excel's Chart Wizard for Scatterplot, Pages 73-74
  • Again, use the AGE (x) and WEIGHTS (y) columns in the BEARS.xls data set, and create a scatter plot.
  1. Create the least-squares line: Instructions not in the textbook, given here:
  2. Right-click on any of the blue coordinates in your scatter plot.
  3. Choose "Add Trendline"
  4. Make sure Linear is chosen; also click on the last two checkboxes:
  • Display Equation on chart
  • Display R-squared value on chart
  1. Drag the equation and the r-squared value textbox to an empty area on the graph (so it is easier to read).
