Packing Department of a Retail Department Store The following investigation is concerned with the packing operation in a retail department of a retail department store. The department store has for several years provided a free packing and postal service for individual customers who purchase goods to the value of $3,000 or more. The original guarantee was that such goods would be dispatched the day they are purchased. This policy ensures a prompt service to its customers and is said to generate extra sales. Packing Procedure The Packer checks the goods with the advice note (AN) on the packing bench, and takes the AN to the Chargehand's desk, collects a delivery note (DN), goes back to the Packing Bench, and matches it with the goods, AN and pre-printed label (PPL). He then goes to the roll of corrugated paper, cuts a suitable length off and returns to the Packing Bench. He then goes to the Carton rack, where he selects a suitable carton, and again returns to the Packing Bench. He then proceeds to make up the carton, packs the goods in the corrugated paper, packs goods in the carton. The carton is then wrapped in brown paper located by the packing bench, staples on the delivery note, sticks on Label denoting parcel type, and ties the parcel with string. He then takes the parcel to the weighing machine, weighs it, and returns to the bench, and records the weight on the AN. The packed parcel is then taken to an area next to the Carton rack, deposited down, and the Packer returns to the bench, picks up the AN, takes it to the Chargehand's desk, deposits it in file. He then selects, another item of goods. Tips Please leave the Quality, Time, and Distance blank, as there is no information provided in the article.
