To constitute a simple random sampling group, everyone has an equal chance of being selected from the entire population (Bennett et al., 2018). The Bureau of Labor Statistics survey does not use a simple random sample. In a simple random sample, each individual has an equal chance of being chosen independently of others. Instead, the Bureau of Labor Statistics uses a stratified random sample because it divides the entire population into subgroups, and the individuals selected are from those specific subgroups, also known as primary sampling units. By randomly selecting individuals from each subgroup, the survey constitutes a stratified random sample (Bennett et al., 2018). To convert the Bureau of Labor example into a simple random sample, we first assign a unique identification number to each adult in the entire U.S. population. Then, we use a random number generator to select individuals from the entire U.S. population without grouping them into primary sample groups. Obtaining a simple random sample ensures that every individual has an equal opportunity to be chosen for the survey (Bennett et al., 2018).
