How is the movement of Na+/K+ different from the movement of neurotransmitters across a plasma membrane? the movment of Na+/K+ and neurotransmitters acrossthe plasma membraine is essential for the nervouse system but they move through diffrent mecanisums, Na+/k+ move across the plasma membrane by the sodium-potassium pump, this movement is called active transport, The cell expels Na+ out and allows K+ to enter the cell both against their concentration levels giving the cell essential nutrients they need from their environment and expel unwanted waste this ensures that cellular homeostasis is happening Whereas neurotransmitters are stored in vesides in the presynapic neouron and move by a process called Passive diffusion, they must go through a Mutiple process Diffusion - this is when presynaptic neurons release neurotransmitters into the synaptic Cleft which are the tiny spaces between the neutrons this is called Exoctosis. Reuptake is when neurotransmitters are taken up to the presynaptic neuron they can be recycle and reused this is active process and requires energy, by the cell doing this it ensures health and can help regulate the duration of their effectives within the cell Neurotransmitter Transporters- proteins that are embedded in the plasma membrane act like jpumps to actively move neurotransmitters to their concentration level whereas some will move in the opposite direction which require energy as it is active transport.
