Question:
Janet has been seen by you for treatment of depression. Upon entering, she revealed that she was in AA and that she had been sober for 6 months. Janet seems to be happy with her progress, but after a few sessions, she seems to be uncommunicative and upset. After six sessions, she discontinues therapy with you. She learns that she has hired another counselor who treats alcohol use and co-occurring disorders. This morning she received notice from the licensing board that Janet filed a complaint against her alleging that she attempted to treat Janet's alcohol addiction and that she did not have the necessary experience to do so. You are a licensed professional counselor but have not obtained addiction training. Based on this information, answer the following questions:
Does Janet have a valid complaint? Why or why not? How would she respond to the licensing board's complaint? How would she avoid these kinds of complaints in the future?
