Jeff, a manager at a local restaurant, has run into a problem with turnover with his servers. In the past few months a lot of his servers with high seniority in the restaurant have graduated college and have started working full time jobs. Most of those servers have quit to focus on their full time jobs. Jeff is struck with all these servers leaving because they take a lot of knowledge with them. Such as, the menu and how Jeff likes things, and how to keep the restaurant clean. It has left Jeff with not many servers left, and he needs to find more reliable people to take their spots. He goes on a hiring spree and hires five servers within a week's time to replace the older servers. He finds that after they have been trained, only 3 seem like they want to be there, and are hard workers. He then finds that a lot of the newer servers are calling in a lot and not showing up to shifts. In the past Jeff has fired people for not showing up in the past but due to their not being very many servers, he cannot do this anymore because he needs the servers. He has also seen that when they are asked for help from other servers, they dont provide their help. They also have been prone to not do their closing and daily tasks asked by Jeff. He wants the best servers for the restaurant but cant fire them due to not having many in the first place.
1. Do you think more training of these servers would be more beneficial for these new servers?
2. Why do you think Jeff is keeping these mediocre employees rather than firing them and re-hiring new employees, and training them?
3. What would you suggest to Jeff to help get these employees to show up to their shifts? What policies or rules would you put in place?
