John Doe, an engineer employed by a testing laboratory, represents his firm on a standards committee for automobile products. All but two of the members of this ten$-$person committee are engineers. After much deliberation on one standard, the committee arrives at a consensus, but Doe is violently opposed to the result and registers his objection. After carefully considering this objection, the committee passes the standard for formal publication. Subsequently, the laboratory receives a contract to test automobile products to this standard, and Doe is assigned the job of supervising the tests, compiling the final report, which indicates that the samples meet the requirements of the standard, and signing the report on behalf of the firm. He objects because he considers that his signature on a report attesting to the conformance of a product with a standard indicates that he endorses the standard.
