Writing Project #3: Academic or Professional Genre Analysis

Purpose

By the end of this writing project, you will be able to:

  • Identify and understand the genre conventions of academic and professional texts including content, structure, citations, style, design, and mechanics
  • Analyze the construction of academic and professional texts using rhetorical concepts including purpose, audience, and genre
  • Integrate multiple texts into your writing by summarizing, paraphrasing, quoting, attributing, and citing
  • Engage with the ideas from academic and professional genres by responding, interpreting, analyzing, evaluating, and synthesizing
  • Compose a text using the writing process by drafting, reviewing, collaborating, revising, and editing

Task

Please choose a written genre in your main area of academic or professional interest and then write an analysis of that genre. If you have not decided on your major yet, pick whatever discipline sounds most appealing to you at the moment. You will need to identify what written genres are most common in your chosen field: for instance, if you are planning to major in psychology and then go on to enroll in a graduate program in psychology, you might want to look at scholarly articles Links to an external site.in the field, but if you're majoring in communication or journalism, you might want to look into genres like newspaper articles Links to an external site.or press releases Links to an external site.. You can look at more technical genres as well such as technical reports Links to an external site., instruction manuals Links to an external site., or patents Links to an external site.. If you are not sure which genres are most common in your area of interest, talk to your instructor or find somebody more familiar with that field - a family member or friend, a professor, or an academic consultant - and ask them for some advice.

Once you have decided on an academic or professional genre, you will write an analysis of that genre. You will analyze the common features that a text has to display to be considered part of the genre, and you will determine the expectations for writers working in that genre. By working with an academic or professional genre in your major, you become more knowledgeable about this particular genre, but more importantly, you will develop analytical skills that will help you work with any new genre you will encounter in your academic or professional career.

To help guide and ground your genre analysis, find at least three sample texts in this genre. As we work on this project, you will read your texts carefully and take notes for what the text says and how it says it. In your analysis you will need to cite these texts for examples of genre features you describe. Include a Works Cited page and in-text citations to properly credit your samples. Once you are familiar with the samples, start drafting your analysis, focusing on the following questions:

(Note: You will most likely find the most success by focusing on a few questions and giving an in-depth analysis as opposed to trying to answer all the questions.)
