Change management is an organized, systemized approach that thoughtfully moves stakeholders from the present to a new and beneficial future state of action (Center for Creative Leadership, n.d.). Using change management checklists and stage models approach organizational change as planned, managed, and controlled, leading to predictable outcomes. The contingency approach considers the external factors which impact change, factors that are less likely to be controlled. The contingency approach examines the factors impacting change, then designs an appropriate action to manage the change (Palmer et al., 2022).
The contingency approach reminds me of the kids' literature series, "Encyclopedia Brown," whereby the main character comes to a fork in the road, and the reader can choose how the story plays out (Hayes, 2012). The world hit the proverbial fork in the road when the 2020 world pandemic took over the operations of all organizations. Instead of a contingency approach, it became known as the pivot. If this example, the contingency approach to change management saved organizations through quick thinking and continued assessment of changes occurring in real-time.
Edward Jones' COVID response harnessed its communications resources to remove barriers. The investment firm organized increased numbers in the call centers to address client concerns (Orban, 2020). Jones initiated a swift transition overnight from the cumbersome WebEx platform to the more user-friendly Zoom. Branch teams communicated the changes to clients via telephone, webinars, texts, and secure messaging (organ, 2020). Edward Jones' use of the contingency approach met the changing external factors and eased clients' concerns to help stabilize the market.

Change management is a process of guiding organization change into fruition. Change managers work through the preparation, implementation and resolution. There is no one size fits all when it comes to the change process. Our text this week discussed two approaches, the contingency and checklist approach. The checklist approaches take a logical look at change. Think of connecting the dots on a count by numbers picture, you have to go in order to successfully complete the image. With a checklist approach change is successful upon completing the approach steps within the checklist. However, the change is only as successful as the checklist chosen (Palmer, 2022).
The contingency approach goes by the notion that there is not one solution for all situations. Kaleidoscope and participative are two contingency approaches. Contingency goes on to discuss that the approach to changes will have multiple variables. Each person and perspective will provide a unique factor affecting the change. Change managers must look at a multitude of variables; managers will have to work with every employee to ensure they are prepared for the change. Every employee can provide a unique and different perspective on the change. All these works together to create a successful change, this is the kaleidoscope method (Palmer, 2022).
Cultural and communication barriers all impact change. The leaders must ensure they are communicating the change correctly, if the employees do not understand what is happening then they will not be able to implement the change. Global organizations the cultural barrier can be difficult as the leaders must ensure the change well comply with local laws and culture, If it does not match the local culture then it will not be successful.
