There are six images of managing change which are Director, Navigator, Caretaker, Coach, Interpreter and Nurturer (Palmer et al., 2022). The two images that I chose to write about in this weeks discussion post is the image of Navigators and Interpreters.
When it comes to change management, the Navigator is the one that I relate to the most. According to Palmer et al. (2022), "Given the untidy, nonlinear nature of change, navigators have room to maneuver; the course of change may need to be plotted and replotted in response to new information and developments." I think that almost every job is being pushed into a more dynamic field with the expansion of technology making systems more efficient. Because of this, change is inevitable and needs someone who is capable of adapting the plan to grow with the world as it happens.
For the Interpreter, I find this image interesting because its focus is on communicating to get the organization through the change. As Palmer et al. (2022) explains "the interpreter has the task of creating meaning for others, helping them to make sense of events and developments, which, in themselves, constitute a changed organization." I am a big advocate for communication among management and teams so this image fits well with my work style.
When comparing the two, it seems like both are focused on being a part of the team and having a real understanding of the people within the organization. Both of these images focus more on helping the workers accept that the change is happening and providing the assistance needed to facilitate it. In contrast, the navigator seems like it is more in the backend of developing the plans to ensure it goes smoothly whereas the interpreter is at the front end making sure the plan is understood and being implemented properly.

n this image, it is important for managers to intentionally shape capabilities in an organization. In a coachs perspective in the company, it helps to establish the right goals and skills that an employee should have in an organization. This role is comparing the changing goals that an employee should have in the company. It is up to the managers to ensure that employees are setting the best goals and developing new skills within the organization. I used to be a coach when working as a cashier, I would oversee the part time night cashiers and I would coach them and help them establish their goals in their own respective ways. In contrast the coaching image could dictate what needs to be done, not set goals or even establish individual goals for an employee. Coaching is a good way for managers to approach employees because this way, employees can come to those managers with questions and managers would understand and be able to handle the problems that arise within a company. It is important for managers to be able to sympathize with employees and see the employee as a person not just a number.
Caretaker
In Caretaker, the caretaker image, the (ideal) management role is still one of control, although the ability to exercise that control is severely constrained by a range of internal and external forces that propel change relatively independent of management intentions (Palmer et. al., 2022 pg. 38). This is an ability to propel the change that needs to be made as an individual. As managers it is important to ensure that employees are part of the change. It can compare it to managers and corporate managers because its intentions can assume that change is going to happen. In contrast to this image, it can be the managers do not control and are unable to control the range of internal and external forces that employees are not able to manage themselves. We have a caretaker image with our corporate offices managers. We have our own independent managers that handle the day to day but overall the corporate officers have final say in how a company is run and even the GMs of each store must ensure all their employees are establishing goals and change can happen internally like getting a new GM at a store and then hiring new managers for the sales floor. So I have been through something like this in recent years. Caretaker is a role that can propel individuals into independent management.
