Question 1(group):
The simply supported beam shown in Figure 1 has a rectangular cross-section. The
point force F is 5.5kN and the uniformly distributed load w is 1.8kNm. The
distances a,b, and c along the length of the beam are 0.4m,1.1m, and 0.4m,
respectively.
(a) Calculate the maximum bending moment in the beam (Hint: solve for the internal
bending moment at Point C).
(b) Create the bending moment diagram and note the location of the maximum
bending stress.
(c) If a compressive axial force of 15kN is applied at Point D(and reacted at Point A),
calculate the combined stress (in MPa ) at the top of the beam at Point C.
Then show your answers to the TA.
Question 2(individual):
The steel member AB of a crane section is shown in Figure 2, and its length is 3.25
m. Calculate the minimum (i.e. most negative) combined stress in AB when a load of
20.9kN is applied at the mid-point of the beam (assume the mass of the beam and
its deflection is neglected.
The cross-section of the beam has a base (b) of 100mm and a height (h) of 340mm.
Enter your answer to three significant figures in MPa.
