Kalebs Cleaners:
You read about and practiced various concepts regarding organizational structure and culture, which affect employee behavior and success. Read the scenario carefully and provide your response to the checklist items regarding the organizational structure and culture in the fictional organization provided below.
Scenario fictional:
Kalebs Cleaners, a company specializing in cleaning vacation rentals, has the following structure and culture:
All employees work fulltime. The cleaners are paid a premium rate, which is much higher than what they would earn working for any other company. Kalebs Cleaners has nine teams of cleaners. The company is very successful and has an expanding client base. Up until a few months ago, employees were treated like family. Kaleb, the owner, always had an opendoor policy, and employees would come in to share ideas, solve problems, etc. However, with the company's growth, Kaleb became too stressed and decided it was time to delegate.
Until recently, Kaleb founder and president had personally hired and trained each employee. Three months ago, Kaleb promoted one of his best employees, Janet, into the leadership position of team manager to take over some of the financial and training duties. Janet has been training new employees for two new teams to accommodate the growing business.
While the high cleaning standards implemented by Kaleb have been maintained, a few of the new employees have been given instructions by Janet to put anything left by departing guests into a box because throwing things out is wasteful and if guests leave something, it is not up to the cleaners to inform anyone. Sometimes, guests leave unopened food, alcoholic beverages, or other consumables. Other times, cleaners find headphones, chargers, or clothing items. Last month, one of the cleaners found a pair of Gucci LowTop Sneakers. They were also placed into the box, which is emptied frequently. Janet claims that she donates items in the box to a local charity. One of the new employees told another new employee that they saw Janet placing the Gucci LowTops in her car, separate from the box that she put in her trunk.
Janets best friend at work, Paula, who usually was assigned to clean with her in her last position, has been recently promoted to supervisor of the teams based on Janets recommendation to Kaleb. Paula is now in charge of the team scheduling and customer service.
While employees had been comfortable cleaning items out of refrigerators and putting them into the box, recent instructions to put more expensive items into the box have left them feeling uncomfortable. A few of the employees have talked amongst themselves about bringing their concerns to Kaleb, but they are concerned about how it might affect their positions. They fear that Janet might deny their claims. One employee suggested they approach Kaleb with pictures of items in the box. Still, some employees are concerned that Janet would make their working conditions unbearable or that they could even lose their highpaying positions. Also, one of the new employees reported their suspicion to the supervisor last week only to have it dismissed. The next week, they received notice to clean several extra vacation rentals above and beyond their agreedupon maximum.
