King Kong Reflection/discussion

Based upon your viewing and your knowledge of how Max Steiner used the score in this film, do you believe the creature King Kong gained empathy from the viewer (you and/or other watchers)? Let's discuss the following points:

• What did you hear in the music of the film that gave you clues about the state of mind of the character being portrayed on screen?
• How was the "monster" portrayed? How does his character reflect social norms about animals at this time period?
• At what point did you gain empathy towards the beast? Or if you did not-- please tell us why. I have students go both ways with this.

Remember as we delve in this, there is no right or wrong answer. This is all about analyzing and emotional response. We see things differently because of our own map, our own life experiences, so tell us your ideas about this based upon what you have gathered in this unit.
