A 3-story structure is about to be constructed on the UMass Amherst flagship campus. The
structural engineer who oversees the construction wants to estimate the load that is applied to
each of the columns. If the total floor load of a 6^('') floor (including the superimposed dead load
from the beams, the slab, the floor tiles, and the ceiling load) is 160 psf , the floor live load is 70
psf, and the roof live load is 40 psf , determine the loads for each column and calculate the total
force at the base of each column. All floors have equal dimensions.
