Lab $4$ Multiple Cantilevered Strain Gauge Lab

OBJECTIVE:

Gain an understanding of strain gauges and their use.

Experimental investigation of a complex stress state by various methods.

Further understanding of when and where $\frac{P}{A},M\frac{c}{\text{I}},$ etc. apply and do not apply.

Use strain gauges to measure strains and compare to theory and FEA.

Further understanding of the FEA method by solving problems using FEA and comparing with experimental and theoretical solutions.

See the effect of strain gage grid size compared to stress and strain gradients at the gage location.

Further develop effective technical documentation.

PROCEDURE:

Carefully measure the dimensions of the test cantilever apparatus. Be sure to note and measure the locations of the area covered by each strain gauge

Note the strain gauge information $($gauge factor...etc.$)$

Hook up the strain gauges to the strain indicator unit

Turn on the strain indicator unit and set the gauge factor

Balance each gauge

Apply the load to the end of the cantilever

Switch to each gauge and record the reading

Each group member should perform steps $5,6,$&$7$
