Lead, found in some paints before about 1978, is a neurotoxin that is harmful to the brain and nervous system of children. Children putting their hands in their mouths after touching painted surfaces is a common type of lead exposure. Many old neighborhoods in the US still have houses that contain lead paint. A study was conducted by collecting paint samples from a random sample of old homes in Seattle to determine if the average lead level in the paint in old homes exceeds the US EPA guidelines.
