LEAD2370 Lesson 2 Ethical Decision Making Activity Activity: Nuclear Bomb This exercise is designed to challenge your thought process. There is no right or wrong answer, merely the intention is to provoke thoughtful dialogue about how ethics can influence decision making. Challenge yourself to listen to your peers and look at the process through their eyes; consider how their own values and ethical standards are contributing to their perspective. This should be done without judgment and in a safe, respectful manner. You have just been informed that your entire country is the target of an imminent nuclear attack. Known for being prepared for all sorts of calamities, several people from your community have arrived at your house looking for shelter. You have built and stockpiled a state of the art fall-out shelter that can house you, your family and another 6 people for up to two years, the time that you will have to stay in the shelter while the air clears. You only have minutes to decide before the missile hits its mark. Those that do not come into the shelter will certainly die, and you must not exceed the capacity or else you, and everyone else, will starve to death before you can emerge in 2 years. Here are the people that are seeking shelter: A 20-year-old mom and her 4-month-old baby (they count as one spot). . A 22-year-old male who is husband and father to the above. Unemployed factory worker. A 45-year-old single mother who is also the local Mayor. She used to be a nurse. An 8-year-old boy, son to the Mayor. A 31-year-old male who is a science teacher at the local high school. He is also your golf partner on Monday nights. A 77-year-old male Minister of a local church. . A 52-year-old female historian, linguist and writer. A 54-year-old female gardener, who is also the partner of the historian. They have been together for 35 years. She was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. An 80-year-old man father to the historian above. He has dementia and they have been caring for him in their home. 19-year-old bodybuilder who is a local celebrity for winning a number of national competitions and getting highlighted in a popular sports magazine. A 65-year-old male retired police officer-turned-security guard. Has a gun that he won't part with. A 35-year-old female social worker. A 36-year-old male mechanic and local business owner. Married to the social worker A set of 12-year-old twins (one boy, one girl). Children of the social worker and mechanic. One of the twins has autism. Using your own ethical standards, and what you have learned in this lesson about decision making and ethical frameworks, identify the 6 people that you are going to save in your shelter.
