Leadership and management are two distinct yet complementary concepts within organizations. Leadership is about inspiring and influencing others towards a shared vision or goal, often focusing on long-term strategy, innovation, and motivation. It involves setting direction, aligning people, and motivating them to achieve their best. On the other hand, management is more about planning, organizing, and controlling resources to efficiently achieve specific objectives. It focuses on day-to-day operations, ensuring tasks are completed, and resources are utilized effectively (Kakemam et al., 2020). While all managers have responsibilities in overseeing tasks and resources, not all managers necessarily exhibit leadership qualities. Leadership involves inspiring and guiding others, whereas management is more about administering and controlling processes (Lawrence, 2014). However, effective managers often display leadership qualities, such as clear communication, empathy, vision, and the ability to empower and develop their teams.

During organizational changes, effective leadership becomes crucial for successful adaptation. Leaders who demonstrate strong communication skills, empathy, adaptability, and vision can help navigate uncertainty and inspire confidence among employees (Kakemam et al., 2020). They foster a culture of openness and collaboration, encouraging employees to embrace change and contribute to the organization's goals.

In my organization, I've observed leadership characteristics during changes, such as transparent communication from senior management, active engagement with employees at all levels, and a willingness to listen to concerns and ideas. These leadership behaviors contributed to an effective change by reducing resistance, increasing employee buy-in, and fostering a sense of ownership in the process (Lawrence, 2014). Additionally, leaders who provided support, encouragement, and resources helped employees adapt to new challenges more effectively.

Overall, effective leadership during organizational changes is essential for facilitating a smooth transition, maintaining employee morale and engagement, and ultimately achieving successful outcomes. Leaders who embody key leadership characteristics can significantly contribute to the effectiveness of change initiatives by inspiring and empowering their teams to embrace new opportunities and challenges.
