Lean Warehousing Part 2 (50 Points)

  • Read Lean Warehousing Chapters 3, 4, and 5.
  • Answer Questions relating to the chapters.

Submit a Word document in Blackboard answering the below questions. This does not have to be in a paper format. All answers must be in your own words, do NOT copy/paste please.

Chapter 3:

  1. Lean Storage: What are three ways to increase the storage in a warehouse, or at least use the space you have more effectively. Please explain in a few sentences how each of the three would help create more lean storage.

Chapter 4:

  1. Handling Materials: The five barriers to productivity (p. 66) dont just apply to a warehouse. Give an example of each barrier from your own experiences. They can be from work, school, or even around your home.

(An example: For #4 Impeded by Organizational Barriers. When I arrived in Iraq with my unit we had 100 flatbed trailers but only 50 trucks. By design we would double stack them (haul a trailer on a trailer) to get to our area of operations, then unstack (unload) upon arrival. When we got to Iraq I was yelled at for days to unstack my trailers. But the barrier was I had no docks or cranes to physically do that! (We eventually built our own dock so wed not get yelled at anymore.)

Chapter 5:

  1. Lean Tools: Assume you are in charge of choosing a new Warehouse Management System for the company. List and explain three questions youd ask yourself, or ask the vendor about the software to ensure you got what worked best for your company? (For example: Does the software play music? This is important because we all like music and music increases productivity.)
