Let us say that a list $($or string$)$ matches an input pattern $($another list or string$)$ if the pattern is at least as long as the list $($or string$)$ and for every non$-$wildcard item in the pattern the list $($or string$)$ has the same item in the same position. $($in this example, the wildcard item is $?.)$ For example, $$New York$$ matches $$New $??????$ where $?$ is the wildcard. Also, $$New Jersey$$ matches $$New $??????$ where $?$ is the wildcard. But, $$New York$$ does not match $$New Hamp????$$
