This assignment invites you to look at the Research Plan that you included in your Proposal, and to look at your 15-source Bibliography. Although you were not required to formally write out a Synthesis for each of the 15 sources, it is expected that you are aware of how each source fits into your project. Thus, it may be beneficialprior to continuing with this worksheetto briefly review your sources and to quickly make note of what you think is important in, and how think you might use, each of the sources. Having this written out will make filling out this worksheet quicker and easier.

1. Look at the Plan section of your Proposal. List below the parts of the project you expected as you envisioned your research. If your Plan section is less developed, then you may want to develop it by breaking your Research into as many small steps/tasks as possible. (For example, not "do secondary research" or even "research nuclear energy," but instead much more specific tasks. In the example of nuclear energy," history of" and "new approaches" would be a start in breaking down, but go further, such as exploring particular disasters or breakthroughs. If you were focusing on disasters, then list each disaster that you would need to look more closely at, etc. etc. So again, how many specific research tasks can you assign yourself as a way to clarify the scope of the research project?) Now, look at your Bibliography. Consider which sources connect to other sources. For example: Which 2 or 3 (or more) sources focus on some aspect of the background you will need to provide? Which 2 or 3 (or more) sources focus on one of the issues within your project? Which 2 or 3 (or more) show the debate and discussion by taking different positions on an aspect of your project? Etc. Etc.

2. For each of the groupings you identify in your Bibliography (some sources will probably belong in more than one grouping), come up with a label or title for what ties them together. Below, list all of the groupings you can come up with. Next, you will be asked to compare the two lists. Did your parts and anticipated sections stay the same? Did something new develop through the research? Does looking at the two lists reveal something that you have left undone?

3. Combine the two lists into one list. Analyze the new list and consider what order these things should be presented in when considering the needs of an academic audience. What order will best communicate what you have discovered? Experiment with some variations of first, next, last, etc. Below, provide a working list that you think will work well as the parts of your essay, in the order you feelat the momentwill be most effective. Finally, you will be asked to begin filling out some of the sections. Choose at least two of the sections/headings in your list.

4. For your two chosen sections, briefly explain what sources you expect to use in the section, and explain what idea you want to communicate in the section. (No assigned word countjust include as much as needed to share what you know or think you know at this point in the process.) What you have at the end of this process is the beginning of a working outline for your essay. As a working outline, it is open to change and development and experimentation as you work your way towards a completed draft. Or, what you may have is an incomplete outline, with the holes and gaps and need for more clearly revealed by going through this process. In that case, you will be working to develop and fill those gaps as you move forward.
