The student will complete a self-reflective lab learning journal. The assignment represents a reflection of learning so far in the course through virtual classrooms and online learning. The student will carefully follow the instructions, completing each provided question in enough detail to provide both scopes of understanding and acknowledgment of their learning.

What is Self-Reflective Practice

The self-Reflective practice provides personal, thoughtful analysis of your individual participation/progress in learning environments such as discussions, virtual classroom training presented lectures, assigned readings, and activities such as chat app or zoom scheduled meetings. Your reflective document may include assessments of other's participant's key interactions/learning that may have occurred during the virtual classroom settings.

Goal of Self-Reflective Practice

To learn to self-reflect and self-appraise are part of "journaling" which helps you articulate what you learned thus far about the hospitality, culinary, and baking industry and why we strive to do things as we do through professionalism, curiosity and resiliency. This is referred to as "deep learning" as it evolves through your own self-analysis, rather than through lectures, memorization, or "book learning." This method of thoughtful introspection will help you in your academic progress providing insight to share with a potential employer or industry mentor. It will help formulate and clarify for your reflection the necessary talent, knowledge and skills you have mastered and provide better insight to the interests and direction you wish to follow.

Example of what constitutes an acceptable and worthy response to each journal question?

An acceptable answer to each question needs to be thoughtful to your learning and progression as a professional preparing oneself for a career in the hospitality industry through intrapreneurship, and innovative thinking. Think of the skills and knowledge you may need to move forward successfully in reaching your career goals. Secondly, your answer should be insightful to the way you learn and what is important to you as a member of a learning community (your classroom peers and instructor).

What should you write about in journal?

Analyze the merits (or challenges) of the decision-making processes used in this class to overcome new learning or grasping concepts or situations new and different to what you have encountered in the past such as online learning, working in a collaborative setting or meeting a difficult deadline. Additionally, review the learning objectives in your course topical outline and list provided to whether you successfully mastered them or not and where you may need further improvement. Be sure to address how you are or are not achieving the given learning objectives.
