Question:
Many IRS officials have testified before Congress stating that the IRS is understaffed and cannot do their "due diligence" because of the cutbacks of the previous administration's sequester and other job reduction programs ongoing in the federal government.
(Many in public service refer to this as the "hollowing out" of government, or as some in the GOP refer to it - "starving the beast." Meaning, prevent government from doing what it is supposed to do by cutting off funding, then accuse the very agencies that had the most severe cuts, of being inefficient and ineffective and suggest abolishing them all together).
How are we to understand the state of our democracy when the (legislators both federal and state) refuse to pass budgets to staff agencies, but at the same time hold them accountable for their job performance? For example, the Hawaii House Speaker just proposed cutting the State Auditor's Office in half, rape kits go unprocessed for years in other State Police crime labs because of cutbacks in funding, E. coli, and other bacterial break outs in food increase because there are not enough health inspectors, bridges collapse and roads deteriorate because there are not enough safety inspectors or funds for infrastructure construction. How does this serve "the people"? Is there a better way for nonprofits and government regulating agencies to communicate and work together?
Please explain in detail.?
