MAT 152 SPRING Project 2017- Due 5/05/2017 by 11:59 p.m. +5% Extra Credit if submitted by 11:59 p.m. on 04/28/2017 The purposes of the project are to distinguish between quantitative and qualitative data, to demonstrate both an understanding of the appropriate means of displaying, analyzing and interpreting statistics on each type, and the appropriate use of technology to produce a report of the findings. Project Outline 1. Pick a meaningful survey topic that can be investigated by asking people in your surroundings (students, coworkers, neighbors, etc.). Identify and explain how the sample was selected. You must survey at least 30 people. 2. Your survey must contain 2 questions: a. 1 question that has a qualitative (word) response b. 1 question that has a quantitative (numeric) response. 3. You must get your instructor to approve the survey (either verbally or via e-mail). 4. Collect and compile the data. The report you submit must include the following: 5. An introduction, explaining what topic is being investigating and how the survey was conducted. 6. Using SPSS, a. For the qualitative data 1. Create a frequency table 2. Create a pie chart and a Pareto chart 3. Find the mode. (There is not a specific SPSS output for this, so just state what the mode is by analyzing one of your other outputs) b. For the quantitative data 1. Calculate the mean, median, mode, range, standard deviation, and five number summary (be sure to list, specifically, what the 5NS is, as it will not be done in the output window. It gives the values out of order). 2. Create a dot plot. 3. Create a box plot. 4. Identify any outliers. 5. Create a histogram using between 5 and 10 classes. 7. Write an overall conclusion. This should include but is not limited to the following points: a. Do you think you obtained results from this sample that were representative of the whole population? Why or why not? b. Discuss your findings by describing the graphs and/or point out any interesting features. Compare the displayed data to what you expected to see. Since you were doing this survey with a purpose in mind, state your conclusions by reflecting on what you see in the graphs. c. What was interesting about this project? What did you learn about your topic? d. If you had to do it over again, what would you do differently? To generate the required output through SPSS, you must first define the variables with the appropriate characteristics in the Data Editor Variable View, then enter the results from your survey. It is advised that you use value labels for your qualitative variable. The one file you submit through the Blackboard assignment must include all of the above items IN ONE DOCUMENT. (#'s 5 - 7) Since your report must include written work as well as SPSS output, it may be useful to generate the output in SPSS first, export it as a Word/RTF (.doc) document and then add the written comments.
