Good morning, class.

I watched the Math Antics video onratios and ratesand liked how it showed ratios as comparisons and unit rates as a way to "zoom in" on one-unit quantities. The video made a simple point with huge practical payoff: once you can set up a ratio correctly, you can solve lots of day-to-day problems quickly by cross-multiplying or converting to a unit rate.

Here are a few concrete ways I use ratios and proportions in everyday life:

Cooking and scaling recipes. If a recipe for 4 people needs 2 cups of flour, to make it for 10 people I set up the proportion 2/4=x/10 x=5 cups. Much faster than trial and error.

Budgeting & unit price comparison. When grocery shopping, I divide price by quantity (price per ounce/kg) to compare deals. That unit rate tells me which product is cheaper per unit.

Travel and speed/time problems. If I know distance and average speed, I use the rate speed=distance to plan arrival times or to estimate fuel consumption.

Medicine dosing & mixing.Dosage often depends on weight (e.g., mg per kg). Mixing paints/chemicals requires exact ratios for color or reactivity safety.

Maps & models.Scale factors (e.g., 1:50,000) are proportions; to get real distances I multiply measured map distance by the scale factor.

Construction & photography.Scaling blueprints or resizing images preserves proportions, so things look and function correctly.
