ME361: Design of Machine Components
Fall (2024)
Problem 1(20 points)
A gusset plate is welded to a base plate, which is secured to a foundation using four bolts, with a diameter of db=38in. Before applying the external force of F=1000lbbf, the bolts were torqued to develop a preload with a tensile force of Pb=5000lbbf per bolt. Assume the gusset plate is rigid and rotates about corner A. Determine the following:
tensile load in each bolt due to the applied force F
tightening torque for reused and lubricated bolts, given k=0.18
identify the bolt experiencing maximum normal and shear stresses.
based on your answer to (3), calculate:
i. axial and shear loads on the critical bolt.
ii. maximum principal tensile stress and maximum shear stress.
