me to answer my classmate below: Both duty and consequence are important factors in ethics, with each of these being a significant aspect in any ethics-based decision making. Although, in my opinion, the most important aspect in ethical principles is duty, not consequence. I say this because ones values in ethical decision-making should be based on the rightness or wrongness of an action, despite any consequences. Duty is important in ethical principles because it sets a standard for decision-making that is based on the values of what is good or bad, and right or wrong. When incorporating duty in our ethics, we are lining our actions/decisions up with our values, which helps to ensure that our actions are morally sound and just. According to North Carolina State University, duty-based ethics stresses that fidelity to principle and duty are the most important. The consequences of an action, according to Kant, do not matter. What matters is that the act itself is right, that one does one's duty (Ethics in Computing). This quote shares the thoughts of philosopher Immanuel Kant, who pushed the idea that a true ethical choice is done so when duty is involved in the decision-making process. Basing ethics on duty is crucial in situations where there is a clear moral obligation to do the right thing, regardless of the consequences, personal gain or benefits.
