MGMT 350 Caselette #1 Instructions: Please read the caselette material (background and exhibits) and then answer the questions by accessing the link within the Assignments folder on Blackboard. Background: Marcus is a manager at Surf & Turf Caf. The economy has not been very strong in recent months and sales for the caf have steadily declined. As a result, there is increased pressure on Marcus to manage expenses which includes keeping the cost of labor (essentially how many people work at any given time and for how long) to a minimum. To minimize the cost of labor, Marcus knows that he needs reward those employees who are high performing and productive and discipline those employees who are not. High performing employees are those with acceptable results on the Performance Scorecard, which is essentially a review of each employees behavior each quarter (a three month period). Productive employees are those that that score a B or above on the Teamwork Performance Scorecard metric. Teamwork involves an employees willingness to complete tasks for each shift in collaboration with other employees including but not limited to cleaning, silverware preparation, stocking of paper goods like napkins and to go bags and more. Marcus believes that he may need to take more formal steps to terminate underperforming employees in the coming weeks. He is worried that if low productivity is permitted to continue such behavior will spread rapidly to other employees and will impact the customer experience and therefore sales. As a result, Marcus commits to reviewing the Performance Scorecard and the Absentee and Tardiness policy as part of his evaluation.

If an employee must miss a shift for any reason the employee must contact a manager at least four hours prior to the start of the shift for the absence to be excused. If an employee fails to contact a manager at least four hours before a shift, the absence will be considered unexcused. If an employee arrives for an assigned shift more than 15 minutes late, the employee will be considered tardy. An employee who has two or more unexcused absences or is tardy four or more times during a quarterly period may receive disciplinary action including but not limited to a written warning or termination.
