I agree with your evaluation here. It feels to me though, that the author, when weighing scientific advancement against ethical concerns, began leaning towards advancement taking priority. It is a difficult conversation because one often comes at the expense of the other like freedom and security.
I am interested in talking more about your second point and applying today's ethics when considering an older situation. While it may not change things in the end, viewing an aged situation through the lense of today's ethics is exactly how we continue to improve not only our ethics, but all aspects of medicine. Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it
