Module 2 includes five discussion questions. Please read the instructions carefully for each question.
[Chapter 4] Please analyze your current (or previous) job characteristics based on the five components of the job characteristics theory. How is it related to your job satisfaction?
[Chapter 4] Please check the definition of emotional labor from the textbook and chapter 4 lecture. Does your job require high emotional labor? Or does it not require emotional labor? Why do you think your job requires more (or less) emotional labor than other job titles?
[Chapter 5] How do you manage stress? Please share your stress management strategies with your classmates.
[Chapter 6] Which of the outcomes from the textbook will give you more motivation? Are you more attracted to extrinsic outcomes or intrinsic outcomes?
[Chapter 6] Please think of any outcomes that you get from your current (or previous) workplace. Did you feel that you are equitably treated according to equity theory? How do you respond when you experience overreward or underreward?
(Optional) Complete the Connect activities on Stress for extra credits (5 points).
Instructions:
For Question 1, please check textbook Figure 4-3(Job Characteristics Theory) for five components of the job characteristics theory (i.e., variety, identity, significance, autonomy, and feedback), and discuss how job characteristics are related to your job satisfaction.
For Question 2, please think about your emotional labor level. Try to compare with other job titles (e.g., Lawyer, Social worker, Registered nurse, Librarian, Police officer, Dental hygienist, etc.). Please compare your emotional labor level with any other job titles you can think about and share why your job has more (or less) emotional labor than other jobs.
For Question 3, please share your stress management strategies with others.
For Questions 4 and 5, please check textbook table 6-2(Extrinsic and intrinsic outcomes) and table 6-5(Some outcomes and inputs considered by Equity Theory) before you think about your answer, and share your thoughts.
Question 6 is an option. If you'd like to get some extra credits, complete the Connect activity. Three attempts are allowed. I will use the best score. It will be helpful for the course letter grade at the end of the semester, especially when the student is at the borderline (i.e., a course total of 89% can be moved to A,79% can be moved to B).
Please post your initial response by Wednesday 23:59(Eastern Time), and comment on the posts of three classmates by Sunday 23:59(Eastern Time).
Extra Credit: If you create your initial response by Day 3, there will be 3 points. If you actively participate in the discussion (e.g., respond to four or more postings with good quality comments), I will add some extra credits up to 5 points. You can see it in a separate row on your grades rubric page (Discussion Extra credit). It will be directly reflected in your course total grade each week.
