in medical technology. However, when it came to managing its internal data, it relied on a

largely outdated and inefficient manual system.

The hospital's data $-$ including information about doctors, patients, and staff $-$ was scattered

across different departments and maintained in various formats such as paper files, Excel

spreadsheets, and isolated computer programs. This situation led to numerous challenges,

including data duplication, accessibility issues, errors due to manual data entry, and difficulties

in data analysis and reporting.

As the hospital continued to grow, these problems became more acute. The management team

started realizing that the lack of a centralized and efficient system for managing their data was

hindering their operations and affecting their ability to provide efficient patient care. They

acknowledged the need for a comprehensive and structured database system that could

manage and streamline the information about their doctors, patients, and staff members.

The primary goal was to have a system that allowed them to track doctors, including their

specialties, years of experience, and work schedule preference $($e$.$g$.,$ day, evening or night$).$ For

patients, the hospital wanted to store appointment history, current medical conditions, and

emergency contact details. As for the staff, they wanted to track their positions, departments,

hire dates and any managerial positions held at the hospital.

By implementing a new database system, the hospital aimed to improve data accuracy,

enhance accessibility of information, eliminate redundancy, and ultimately improve the quality

of healthcare services. Furthermore, this new system would support their commitment to

privacy and security by ensuring that sensitive patient data was stored and managed

appropriately.

The hospital's management decided to hire a team of database designers and IT professionals

to design and implement a database system that could cater to their specific needs. This team's

initial task is to develop an Extended Entity Relationship Diagram and then design a database

system that could transform the way Belmont General Hospital managed its data.
