My company is changing from a functional structure to a matrix structure. In the beginning of the process of switching I think there will definitely be some resistance. Some employees might not like the switch but in the end it will benefit the company greatly. The resistance I foresee in process is potential uncertainty about roles and responsibilities within the employees, the change in team dynamics may be a challenge for some employees to over come. Also some employees might not like having to report to a team leader and a department manager. Picking out the right team leaders and department managers will also be a challenge not every employee will be able to handle that role so I will need to choose accordingly.
To overcome the potential resistance I would make sure to communicate with every employee so everyone is aware of the changes coming in the near future, I would also offer training programs and resources to help employees understand the way a proper matrix structure operates. I will also tell the employees my reasoning to the changes and make sure they don't feel left out. I would also recognize and reward the employees that embrace the matrix structure.
