need a response :Harmony and class: Your response to this week's discussion touches on the resiliency of infants and children. Sometimes the idea of resiliency can lead to complacency in your community. Such as thinking a child will not remember a traumatic event or delaying interventions thinking that the child will just get over it.
In the psychological and social services professions, we need to address prevention at all levels.
Primary Prevention - prevention illness before it starts - the goal would be to prevent abuse, trauma and other adverse childhood experiences.
Secondary Prevention - intervening quickly after the adverse experience or early signs of illness -- Early intervention
Tertiary Prevention - decreasing the impact of the illness of on individual and system around the individual
Too often in my work, I am doing Tertiary Prevention. Many times, clients, couples, families and the system do not come in till it reaches the level of illness.
What are some ways, the field of psychology can take a more active roles in Primary and Secondary prevention?
