Hello Professor Sartain and classmates,
After reading article from Chakravorti, it made me realize some of the positives and potential negatives that I have seen with my current company, Mosaic. For example, over the past few years, fertilizer prices have been relatively low and put a strain on the producers. Even though Mosaic was trying to cut costs to stay profitable, they decided to take some risk and acquire Vale in Brazil. In the face of adversity due to abnormally low prices, they merged the potash and phosphate divisions, which made more employees available to help with the Vale merger (Chakravorti, 1). Many of these employees have went to Brazil to help with the integration of the cultures between what was two different companies, into one company.
On the negative side, I now see how there are some missed opportunities. For example, Mosaic had permanently idled the Colonsay facility in Saskatchewan due to higher cost per ton. They could have used the unneeded resources at other sites. When different sites tried to produce specialty products that typically Colonsay had made, they had quality issues as there was no experience in making it. Mosaic could have tried to redeploy those resources to ensure a successful transition. There may have been other opportunities in Mosaic that these employees could have transferred too but unfortunately most were let go.
