We've spent some time this week talking about the role and value of IQ testing. IQ tests are not often done alone, but are instead part of a larger report that is trying to answer a question about the client's functioning. These assessments are often used by School Psychologists or Neuropsychologists and will generally be part of the student's academic file because they are used to inform Individualized Education Plans. Because of the time and cost of administering and interpreting these tests (along with our ethical and legal responsibilities for their use!) they aren't usually done casually.
Generally, when a client receives an IQ assessment you don't receive just the numeric results, but a full report interpreted by a Psychologist that can be legally binding in a school setting and forms the basis for a legal Individualized Education Plan.
This is a sample, redacted report that you might see if a client has this history. Pay attention to the language and the summary/recommendations section to see how this information can be translated for practical application. Share your thoughts. Open to All.

And this week's main discussion was:
You are currently working in the secondary school environment within a rural area and providing counselling and support to high school students. It is presently May during the school year and you receive a referral of a cisgender female, Colleen, who is having trouble choosing her grade 12 courses. Colleen discloses that she has "always scored low on any IQ tests" and is reluctant to meet with you but ultimately agrees to an assessment including a self-esteem scale, a screener for anxiety and depression, and a career inventory.
Based on Colleen's situation, your prior skills course, and your development and knowledge of assessment skills, how might you build therapeutic rapport / therapeutic alliance?
When providing feedback, how will you ensure comprehension and clarity of results? How might you use the results from the assessment and structured assessments in developing your treatment plan?
