Question:
Norms are rules or standards that determine appropriate and inappropriate behavior in a group. How did different norms develop in two similar situations? There are at least two key reasons: (1) People develop norms in new groups based on those of previous groups they have belonged to, and (2) norms develop based on what happens early in a group's existence" (Beebe & Masterson, 2015)
Communication issues can occur when norms from one group are not shared either culturally or socially in another. For example, texting behaviors. TTYL, LOL, ROFL - all of these are simply gibberish to the group member unfamiliar with standard text acronyms. Behaviors can slop over into other channels where they should not be - you would be surprised how many papers I get with texting abbreviations.
When have you joined an established team or group with behaviors or sayings that you found highly confusing at first - even though everybody else seemed to understand? How did you manage?
