A COVID-19 testing facility in Waltham, MA employs 20 lab technicians who process patient samples from Eastern Massachusetts. Technicians have 8-hour shifts (including lunch) but they do not start at the same time. (E.g. some begin at 8:00AM, others at 8:30AM etc.) The technicians take scheduled 20-minute breaks every two hours, and a one-hour lunch break 4 hours after their shift begins. Because of the staggered shift start times, not everyone goes to break or lunch at the same time. When a technician has a break, say at 10:00, the technician must finish his or her lab test before taking the break. They can then use the remaining time for the break. (e.g. If the break was supposed to begin at 10:00, and the technician was working on a lab test, they must finish the test before going on break. If the break began at 10:03, the break would end at 10:20)
