Nursing practice has evolved from shared perspectives of other disciplines over time by moving from a caretaker to a more defined nursing role. Shared governance is seen more in healthcare. This gives nurses empowerment and the ability to share decisions made by other nurses. We have specialized fields with more diverse roles and responsibilities involving patient advocacy, leadership, and research. We now have interdisciplinary interrogation- (examination of a topic from multiple academic and professional perspectives), shared decision making- (where patients and clinicians make decisions), inter-professional collaboration- (professionals from different backgrounds make decisions), evidence-based practice- (integrating research and clinical information), and critical thinking- (analysis and evaluation of information). This offers a broader and more comprehensive approach to healthcare that goes beyond just clinical and biological ways of thinking. Modern nursing has evolved and gained autonomy with decision making, gathering data, making assessments, and drug medication knowledge.
