WHO TO INTERVIEW?
This paper is designed to give you hands-on experience with job analysis through interviewing a
current employee (i.e., a subject-matter expert, also referred to as SME).
The job that you choose can be any job (HR specialist, mall security guard, Starbucks barista,
etc.) but:
You must make sure that you are able to perform a proper job analysis (see the following
part for what should be included).
Also, it needs to be a job that will give you experience with the real job analysis process.
That is to say, do not choose jobs like babysitter; instead, choose a job for which you
could foresee a company actually performing a job analysis.
I recommend that you interview an employee working in a job that you would like to have one
day (e.g., an accountant, consultant, marketing manager, etc.), because this interview will
provide you with detailed information that is practically relevant to your career AND an excuse
to reach out and make connections with professionals in your desired occupation. However, you
are welcome to interview a family member or a friend.
POTENTIAL QUESTIONS TO ASK IN THE JOB ANALYSIS INTERVIEW
*Some of the below questions are redundant, so make sure to avoid asking your SME the same
question 3 times. Please make sure to read through the whole assignment before interviewing
your SME to confirm that you are asking the right questions.*
What is the job being performed?
What are the major duties of your position?
What exactly do you do?
What are the education, experience, skill, and [where applicable] certification and

What are the basic accountabilities or performance standards that typify your work?
What are the environmental and working conditions involved?
