One of the primary purposes of calculating a total cost is to evaluate whether or not a company should produce a product. Marketing firms or departments typically do extensive research with potential customers to determine what price they are willing to pay for a new product, like Wedgewood's specialty candles. After the company knows what price customers are willing to pay and how much it costs to produce each product, they can determine whether or not it makes sense to introduce the new line.
